Tanzania – Effective September 2026
The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania has introduced a new mandatory travel insurance requirement for all foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania.
Under the 2026 Inbound Travellers Insurance Regulations (Government Notice No. 256 of 4th September 2026), all foreign nationals arriving through airports, seaports, and land borders will be required to present valid inbound travel insurance.
What Travellers Need to Know:
According to the new regulations, the insurance can be purchased prior to travel or upon arrival at the point of entry. Visitors who fail to comply may be denied entry into Mainland Tanzania.
The insurance premium has been set at USD 44, payable in Tanzanian Shillings through the official insurance provider’s payment system. The policy will be valid for 92 days from the date of arrival and will permit multiple entries into Mainland Tanzania during this period. Travellers staying beyond 92 days will be required to obtain a new policy.
Citizens of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are exempt from this requirement.

The mandatory policy is designed to safeguard visitors and will cover:
- Emergency medical treatment
- Medical evacuation
- Repatriation of a patient or remains
- Loss of baggage
Coverage limits and claim procedures will be detailed in the respective insurance policy documents.
The service will be administered by the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) and other registered insurance companies in partnership with NIC, under the supervision of the Tanzania Insurance Regulatory Authority (TIRA).
